The only constant in life is change. And as life evolves so must the framework that accommodates it. It is the inescapable destiny of every building to be used for another purpose eventually or simply to be torn down. There is only one way for a building to last forever. It is not by the durability of its materials, although the German bunkers from WW2 along Europe’s West Coast come close. But they too will perish. Even the pyramids fall into ruin once the Pharaohs are gone. The only way for a structure to last forever is to remain relevant to its inhabitants. There is a wooden building on the Fare Islands that has persisted for a thousand years—longer than any of the materials it is made from. By being continually inhabited, loved, and cared for, it prevails. And if the use is discontinued, the love for the structure will inspire the inhabitants to invent new uses for the old frames.
Reincarnation is the gift of breathing new life into old bodies: architecture as radical reinterpretation. No matter how careful an architect designs a building to its brief, it must be open to change to remain in use after the inevitable end of its original purpose. By extending spaces, adding new structures, or reincarnating the original building, we can enable existing structures to evolve with life.
New structures can be tailored for indetermination, to accommodate the maximum number of possible programs. They can be built as a physical framework that inhabitants can download their desired programs onto, just as we do apps on our iPhones. As a gift to the future, the adaptive structure allows transient elements to transform the building, increasing its odds for survival through adaptation—a building that constantly adapts so that the building tomorrow is gently different from the building yesterday. Architecture as the physical platform for human life.
