"I love the everyday." wrote Dan Turell. Not Sunday nor the holidays--but the everyday. The world is already incredibly interesting as it is, and the everyday aspects of our built environment are the most exhilarating things we'll ever find. We don't have to come up with arbitrary artistic expressions to make architecture exciting. All we have to do is look, listen, and learn about what is going on -and let it show.
Architecture is like portraiture. The success of a portrait lies not only in the artist's capacity for self-expression, but also in the artist's abilitv to express the subject. Portraiture is more than its mere appearance, it captures the character and soul of the subject, the site, or the program. Architecture as portraiture bares the bones of the structure, and celebrates the marvel of human flows to reveal the hidden spectacle and future potential.
The world has become so used to the segregation of form and content, of hardware vs. software. Architecture has become like the iPhone -an empty container, a boring box-that comes to life only once you insert a program. We have all experienced a construction site that looks more exciting than the final work, like the cookie dough tasting better than the cookie- the concrete skeleton, the filigree of studs, the X-ray through the unfinished structure revealing proximities and relationships - that only disappear after the final finishes are applied and the paint is dry.
By exposing what happens inside - like revealing the inner mechanisms of a clock-performance becomes form, and surface reveals underlying depth. We want to give the gift of exposing the life, energy, and movement inside a building on its outside. Let's show the personality of the inhabitants by rearranging their homes around their lifestyles. Let's turn the content of the building into its form. Let's express where working becomes living. Let's reveal that all high-rises are like Matryoshkas of towers nested within each other, the concrete core hidden within a glass container. Let's celebrate the vertigo of vertical movement in the middle of a city.
The world is one giant urban laboratory. Eight billion people experimenting everyday how to best live their lives. Let's resist fitting that life into a universal mold-a one-size-fits-all solution by perpetuating preconceived notions of what the world should look like, like the angry infant hammering a round peg into a square hole. We have the vision to see life as it is and as it evolves, and to show it in the most blatant way possible. To turn practicalities into poetry. To create the extraordinary out of the ordinary.
