▍TOTAL

比重稍大但是逐年略微减少的话题是:文化空间和基础设施,平均为 8%和 5%;

Unleashing every student's potential

These graduation projects are quite unique.

Tired of the usual graduation project clichés? Consider these alternatives. They're like diverse friends, each offering unique guidance in topic selection. Graduation projects can indeed be intriguing and diverse.

Today, we're sharing inspiring reference for choosing a thesis topic. Our previous article covered projects until 2019, and this edition is updated to 2023. It focuses on students struggling with design concepts. However, good design isn't limited to students. If you seek work-related inspiration, keep reading.

Whether you're a new student, experienced architect, or seasoned professional, feeling stuck in topic selection is common. We've analyzed design trends to offer deeper insights. Our goal is to inspire your ideas. Freshmen, experienced students, or seasoned designers can all find direction during their graduation projects.

▍From 2013 to 2023, graduation designs can be roughly categorized into 40 topics.

▍TOTAL

Urban Planning, Public Buildings, Cultural Spaces, Infrastructure, Ecological Projects, Renovation, Residential Design, Industrial Complexes, Urban Design, Historical Preservation, Exhibitions, Recreational Facilities, Commercial Spaces, Hotels, Parks, Rural Development, Cemeteries, Religious Spaces, Sports Facilities, Healthcare Facilities, Pandemic Response...

Among them, the proportion of Civic Spaces, Leisure Spaces, Cultural Spaces, and Renovation Projects accounted for 58% of all graduation design topics.

▍2013

Significantly leading other topics are Urban Planning and Civic Spaces, accounting for 19% and 15% respectively; followed by Cultural Spaces and Infrastructure, each representing 9% of all topics. The projects related to Urban Planning and Infrastructure reflect China's vigorous urbanisation process during that time.
It's worth noting that topics related to spiritual aspects like Cemeteries and Religious Spaces have gradually emerged within students' perspectives.

▍Typical Case

Another, 沈一婷

▍2014

Social topics such as Civic Spaces, Cultural Spaces, and Leisure Spaces collectively constitute 38% of the total, firmly securing the top three positions. Following closely, Business and Urban Planning each account for 10%! In this year, Historical Preservation and Renovation projects have seen a notable increase from the previous 3% and 5%, leaping to 7%!
During this year, the urbanization process witnessed a shift in architectural design from incremental to stock markets.

▍Typical Case

▍2016

During the two-year span of 2014 to 2016, the combined proportion of Civic and Societal topics like Leisure Spaces, Civic Spaces, and Cultural Spaces reached over half of the total. Exhibition Spaces and Urban Planning each accounted for 10%; Commercial and Residential Spaces were around 7% each. The distribution of other topics remained relatively stable.

2015 - 2016 was a minor "cold winter" period for the domestic architectural industry, reflected in graduation projects shifting from the new city construction focus of the previous two years to areas like public buildings and cultural spaces. In China's first and second-tier cities, the completion of infrastructure and rapid urbanization led to reduced project volumes. The pursuit of architectural quality and communal environments decreased the rapid expansion of design firms.

▍2017

Urban Planning consistently holds the first position! It occupies one-fifth of the total, which translates to 20%; Civic Spaces steadily secure the second spot at 17%. It's noteworthy that Renovation has made a significant leap from the previous year's 5% to 12%! This marks a remarkable increase of 200%! In this year, topics like Future, Amusement Parks, and Urban Spaces have gradually emerged in various graduation projects, each accounting for 2% of the total.

The rapid proliferation of the internet has ushered in a new wave of growth for second, third, and fourth-tier cities, while first-tier cities have primarily focused on urban renewal and transformation.

▍2019

Civic spaces and leisure spaces are gradually regaining their past popularity, holding steady at the first and second spots! Urban planning is gradually receding, dropping from 20% in 2017 to 10%, halving its proportion! Renovation and historical preservation closely follow, each at 8%, gradually joining the ranks of hot topics. Business and residential projects are also heating up.
Spiritual topics such as religion and cemeteries continue to be favored emerging topics among students. In this year, emerging technologies (interactive installations, robotic arms, 3D printing, prefabrication, etc.) are gradually coming into view, accounting for 1% of the total.

The topics of these two years, more or less, are related to renovation, urban renewal, rural development, historical preservation of ancient buildings, and the like. Meanwhile, prominent business, residential, and cemetery projects are all "byproducts" resulting from these renovations.

▍Typical Case

Old Beijing New Skyline, Urban One Loft,

From 2013 to 2019, the top three topics with relatively stable proportions and slight fluctuations are as follows:
Civic spaces and urban planning, with average proportions of 16% and 13%, respectively;
Leisure spaces and Business topics, averaging 10% and 6% respectively, both with growth rates exceeding 200%!
Topics with slightly larger proportions but decreasing slightly year by year are: cultural spaces and infrastructure, averaging 8% and 5% respectively;
Topics with minimal fluctuations yet consistently stable are: residential, industrial complexes, historical preservation, and exhibition spaces, each accounting for 5%.

Spiritual topics such as religion, cemeteries, rural areas, and healthcare, while not having a significant proportion, have consistently been innovative hot topics, each accounting for 2%; Notably, emerging hot topics with relatively small proportions but substantial growth: renovation, averaging at 7%; an increase of as much as 300%! A newly emerging topic: future-oriented themes, despite only constituting 1% of the total, represents a category of creative design ideas!

▍2020

Initially, the emergence of the pandemic did not immediately impact the formulation of topics. However, as time went on, the design community gradually began to reflect its concern and response to the global situation. In later stages, due to the profound impact of the pandemic on society as a whole, students started focusing more on how to address similar health crises through design, creating better healthcare environments and stronger public health systems for the future.

Interestingly, simultaneously, there has been a notable increase in the proportion of historical and preservation-related architecture. This trend might reflect a renewed examination of historical culture and a reevaluation of the value of traditional architecture. Perhaps during the tumultuous times triggered by the pandemic, people are more inclined to seek stability and ways to connect with the past, which is also evident in the choice of design topics.

▍Typical Case

Urban Renewal and Design of Xichang Old Street in the Post-epidemic Era,

Eternal 1 Kilometer-Tainan Landscape Museum,

▍2021

In 2019 and 2020, topics related to residential spaces experienced nearly a doubling of growth, undoubtedly sparking intense interest in the prospects of residential architecture. However, as we moved towards 2021, this momentum unexpectedly returned to levels seen before 2018. Whether this fluctuation reflects a lack of confidence in the future development of residential architecture within the entire design industry remains inconclusive at present.

Surprisingly, the design topics of 2021 exhibit a significant polarization. On one hand, topics related to the pandemic and the medical field have surged dramatically, hinting at the design community's urgent need for reflection and response within the context of a health crisis. On the other hand, there has been a substantial increase in exhibition space-related topics, creating an illusion that the pandemic might not even exist.

This phenomenon may deeply reveal the design field's sensitivity and responsiveness to multiple factors. The emergence of the pandemic has triggered a reevaluation of living environments, public spaces, and social interaction methods. Designers are urgently seeking innovative solutions that can adapt to the new reality. Meanwhile, the increase in exhibition space-related topics might reflect people's strong desire for cultural exchange, social experiences, and emotional resonance, as if the pandemic has not decisively impacted these aspects.

▍Typical Case

▍2022

Entering 2022, the upward trend in exhibition space-related topics continues, seemingly following the trajectory of the previous year. Simultaneously, historical architecture topics maintain a high level of popularity, which might reflect an ongoing interest in traditional culture and historical heritage.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, it's interesting to note that medical topics do not appear to have continued the growth trajectory seen in previous years. This might indicate that while the pandemic has profoundly impacted society, in terms of design topics, people are gradually shifting their focus from singular medical areas to broader issues.

Another intriguing shift is the rise in attention towards industrial areas, factory buildings, and the renovation of various urban markets. This might reflect a heightened emphasis on urban environment and space reuse, while also aligning with issues like urban development, sustainability, and community revitalization.

Overall, the changes in design topics in 2022 demonstrate the design field's focus on diverse issues and its capacity to respond. The sustained popularity of exhibition spaces, historical architecture, and urban renovation align closely with societal transformation and needs. While the pandemic persists, the design industry appears to be gradually broadening its scope of interest, aiming to think and innovate from a broader perspective.

▍Typical Case

▍2023

Since 2020, planning projects have shown a remarkable rapid growth, achieving an increase of over three times. This phenomenon has garnered widespread attention in the design field, particularly encompassing district planning, urban renewal, plazas and streets, as well as infrastructure planning projects, which practically dominate a significant portion of the design domain.

Simultaneously, the ratio between planning and architectural projects has almost reached a 50-50 distribution, further highlighting the explosive trend of planning projects in the recent period. Particularly noteworthy is the significant popularity of urban renewal projects within the planning category. This might suggest that urban development in mainstream cities has reached a saturation point, leading to a new focus in the design realm on the transformation and enhancement of old city areas.

However, as we enter 2023 and gradually relax the pandemic control measures, the pandemic is almost declared over. Surprisingly, in design topics, there is hardly any sign of the pandemic's influence, as if this unique historical period never occurred. This might indicate that the design field is swiftly adapting to the new reality, shifting its focus back to a diverse array of design issues, no longer dominated by the pandemic.

In conclusion, the rapid growth of planning projects in recent years has captured the attention of the design industry, particularly topics like urban renewal, reflecting new urban development trends. As the pandemic concludes in 2023, the shifts in design topics showcase the remarkable adaptability of the design field, redirecting focus towards a wide array of design challenges and opportunities.
